Types of Vaccines

What is polio?

The Polio vaccine is a vaccine against the polio virus. It was made in 1953 by Salk, and the vaccine’s name is after him. Later Sabin introduced the oral polio vaccine. The polio virus is a virus whose transmission is through contaminated food and water. The stools and urine of the infected person carry the virus.

The virus first causes an intestinal infection causing diarrhea and fever. Later it may either resolve without paralysis or cause paralysis on both sides of the body. If not treated or controlled, it can lead to death. It is highly contagious, and a single case has the power to cause an outbreak in the community.

The Polio vaccine is recommended and given to all children below the age of 5 years. Vaccination can be in the form of polio drops or an injection. Polio drops are viral thanks to the pulse polio program held for children in November and January.
