What is BCG Vaccine?

The Bacille Calmette Guerin (BCG) vaccine is a live attenuated vaccine developed by two French bacteriologists, Albert Calmette and Camille Guerin. One dose of the BCG vaccine should be given to newborn babies soon after birth to prevent them from Tuberculosis as they are susceptible to the disease. BCG vaccine has existed for 80 years and is the most widely used TB vaccine. Now, BCG vaccination has become a part of the Universal Immunization Programme. BCG vaccine can be administered to children up to 5 years.

BCG vaccination helps your children’s immune system fight against the germs that cause serious TB disease. Tuberculosis is a highly infectious disease that affects the lungs and other body parts such as bones, joints, lymph nodes, kidneys, and the spine. TB spreads from one person to another through sneezing or coughing.

BCG vaccine is generally stored in a freezer compartment at a temperature of 2 to 8 Degrees Celsius and has a potential shelf life of 24 months. BCG vaccine is available in a multiple-dose ampoule, i.e., containing 20 doses.

At What Time Vaccination Is Given to a Baby

Many parents are worried about when to provide BCG vaccination for their babies. In India, the history of TB is very prevalent. Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a highly infectious disease that affects the lungs and other parts of the body.

Medical experts recommend that BCG vaccines be administered to children at birth. Occasionally, BCG vaccines for children can also be administered between 1 and 5 years. The best time for your child to get vaccinated is within a few days of birth and up to six months old. You can avail BCG vaccination at home. If your children are older than six months, they must be tested for whether they have TB. Based on the result, your children will be given the BCG vaccine

A very minute reaction to the BCG vaccine is quite common in children, and it gets healed as days pass. BCG vaccine provides immunity to fight against the disease. Many health experts suggest BCG vaccination for babies before they get discharged from the hospital. If your child did not get immunized at birth, you need not worry. Now you can get the BCG vaccine at home through Medintu services. Call our customer support to avail of BCG vaccination in Hyderabad at an affordable price.

Uses of BCG Vaccine

BCG vaccine has many uses. A few of them are as follows:
1. BCG vaccine is administered to people who have not been infected with TB but are at high risk for developing TB disease.
2. BCG vaccine is used as preventive medication priorly but not to treat Tuberculosis.
3. The BCG vaccine treats bladder cancer, tumours, and leprosy with 20% effectiveness.
4. BCG vaccine contains live, weakened bacteria, thereby encouraging the body to produce antibodies against the Mycobacterium that causes tuberculosis.
5. Some experts say this vaccine can be given as medication for a few ailments.

BCG Vaccination Dosage

BCG vaccination for babies is quite difficult as the BCG vaccine needs to be administered to the small arms of newborn babies. So, a short narrow needle of size 15 mm and 26 gauge is used to administer the BCG vaccine to children. The BCG vaccine standard dose for children above one year is 0.1 gm in 1 mL, whereas the BCG vaccine standard dose for children under one year is 0.05 mL. The BCG vaccine standard dose for adults is 1 mL. A single dose of the BCG vaccine is enough to provide lifetime immunity for children. WHO does not suggest secondary doses or Booster doses.

BCG vaccination promotes immunity to fight against bacterial infections, especially Mycobacterium Tuberculosis and Tubercular meningitis. Avail of our BCG vaccine at home for your children. Our medical experts will follow all safety protocols before administrating BCG vaccination at home.

Generally, BCG vaccination for babies is given before they get discharged from the hospital, and BCG vaccine is given upto the age of 5 years. BCG vaccination for adults in the age group over 16 is rarely recommended due to TB risk, and there is no particular evidence for adult BCG vaccination.
