What is Mumps?

Symptoms of Mumps

Following are the symptoms of a mumps infection:

  • Fever
  • Swelling in the cheek due to inflammation of the parotid gland
  • Loss of appetite
  • Muscle pain and tiredness

The disease may be severe in some, but in most people, it is mild. It takes 2-3 weeks for a person to show signs of infection after getting infected.

The mumps virus, also called the rubeola virus, enters the body through the respiratory tract and then infects organs like th salivary gland. Sometimes in males, it can even infect the testis and cause inflammation called orchitis which can cause sterility later in life.

How to Treat and Prevent Mumps?

Treatment is usually symptomatic. The child is given paracetamol for the fever, an adequate amount of fluids and a warm or cold compress for the swelling of the parotid gland.
