What is Mumps?
Mumps is an infection caused by a virus mostly in young children and causes inflammation of the salivary glands. The prominent salivary glands, the Parotid glands, enlarge and form a painful swelling on the side of the cheek in front of the ear. It gives a hamster face appearance due to the swelling in the cheeks.
The child may have trouble swallowing and eating because of the pain. It is a highly infectious disease and can transmit from one child to another via droplets or saliva.

Symptoms of Mumps
Following are the symptoms of a mumps infection:
- Fever
- Swelling in the cheek due to inflammation of the parotid gland
- Loss of appetite
- Muscle pain and tiredness
The disease may be severe in some, but in most people, it is mild. It takes 2-3 weeks for a person to show signs of infection after getting infected.
The mumps virus, also called the rubeola virus, enters the body through the respiratory tract and then infects organs like th salivary gland. Sometimes in males, it can even infect the testis and cause inflammation called orchitis which can cause sterility later in life.
How to Treat and Prevent Mumps?
We can prevent the infection by getting vaccinated against the mumps virus.
Treatment is usually symptomatic. The child is given paracetamol for the fever, an adequate amount of fluids and a warm or cold compress for the swelling of the parotid gland.
