What is the Vitamin B12 test?
Vitamin B12 test is a blood test to measure the amount of vitamin B12 in the blood. Procedure will take nearly five minutes to complete. The blood sample is sent to a laboratory for testing.
How Vitamin B12 lab test is done?
In a collection center, a healthcare technician will collect a blood sample, using a small needle from the vein of your arm. There will be slight pain at the needle insertion site, which will quickly subside. The procedure will take only 5 minutes to complete and then you can leave immediately.
How to prepare for Vitamin B12 lab test?
It is advisable to avoid eating or drinking anything except water for 8-12 hours before the test.
What are the indications for the Vitamin B12 test?
- Vitamin B12 examination is usually done at the same time as a folic acidtest because the absence of either one or both can result in anemia called megaloblastic anemia.
- A Vitamin B12 and folate test is often preferred to check for certain types of anemia.
- The test is done if the blood report shows less red blood cell (RBC’s) count, decreased hemoglobin and hematocrit, or presence of enlarged RBC’s. Generally, a high RBC mean corpuscular volume (MCV) signifies that the red blood cells are enlarged.
- People having pernicious anemia; is a rare blood disorder wherein the body is unable to absorb Vitamin B12 from the food. It is mostly due to the absence of a gastric protein called an intrinsic factor. Without this protein, Vitamin B12 cannot be absorbed.
