What is a Obstetric Scan?
An obstetric scan is a medical imaging process where sound waves are used to construct images of a fetus and environment in the uterus. In Family planning it helps in confirmation of pregnancy, observation of the growth and development of the fetal, observation of the fetal heart rate, calculation of date of estimated delivery, indication of multiple births, and observation of any abnormality that may be with the fetus or the mother. It is very much a part of prenatal services through which information relating to the health of the woman and the fetus can be obtained.
What is the purpose of Obstetric Ultrasound?
Confirming Pregnancy: It is used in distinguishing between the existence of a developing fetus or not in the uterus.
Monitoring Fetal Development: Making assessments regarding the fetus’s growth and development at different pregnancy trimesters and regular listening to the fetal heartbeats and activity.
Determining Gestational Age: Helps to take the measurements of the fetus and come up with a better estimate of the due date.
Multiple Pregnancies: Asks for confirmation if there are multiple fetuses development in Uternus, such confirmation is essential in the monitoring of complications witnessed in multiple pregnancies.
Placenta and Amniotic Fluid: Locates the placenta and determines its role; also detects the volume of amniotic fluid for the baby’s healthy development.
Detecting Abnormalities: Assesses for risk factors of congenital anomalies or developmental concerns so intervention can be initiated, and documents recorded complications, for example, growth retardations or other correlated problems.
Guiding Further Testing: May contain information which requires further investigations like genetic testing or further imaging.
Offering Reassurance: Gives the expectant parent a chance to physically assess the baby’s status and relieve some of the tension.
Types of Obstetric ultrasound
1. Transabdominal Ultrasound: It is a standard USG which is done at the time of pregnancy and it is done by the use of a transducer that scans the fetus and other associated structures. It is done between the period 13 to 40 weeks.
2. Transvaginal Ultrasound: It is done by placing a small transducer in vagina for capturing better images of the uterus when you are in early months of pregnancy. It is done between 0- 12 weeks.
3. 3D Ultrasound: This is a further enhanced ultrasonic scan that generates pictures of the fetus in three dimensions. This technique can offer a more detailed picture of the fetal and can be used for assessment on specific parts of the fetal or for features.
4. 4D Ultrasound: The next one is a 3D ultrasound with real movement meaning the fetus can move around as the camera is capturing the images in 3D and real time, so the parents will see their fetus moving around. It can be used for Antenatal bonding and to have a better view of the fetus but it may be useful in diagnosing certain conditions as well.
5. Doppler Ultrasound: This is useful in determining the flow of blood in the foetus. For example, it assists when trying to determine the efficiency of blood flow, which could also inform fetal health checking. It is mainly used in cases where pregnant women are perceived to be at risk, especially situations where fetal growth may be restricted.
6. Fetal Echocardiography: It is a type of ultrasound that mainly concerns the fetal heart. They employ superior approaches towards developing images of the heart’s anatomical structure as well as its functionality.
What is the Procedure for the scan?
The procedure for a Obstetric Ultrasound is straightforward and typically involves the following steps:
- Check-In: When you proceed to the lab you have to sign in and in some cases, there are forms that need to be completed.
- Preparation: There may be a need to put on a gown. The technician needs to make the patient understand the procedure.
- Positioning: You are supposed to be positioned on an examination table or a bed; lying flat on your back.
- Gel Application: The gel will be applied by one of the radiologists on your stomach. This gel is used to scan in an area of interest, in other words it is used to scan a specific region.
- Probe: The technician has a conductor that comes in contact with the area having the gel applied on it.
- Image Generation: The probe will take images as the technician shifts it around. The device grating sounds could be heard while it operates.
- Duration: The entire procedure lasts approximately the same as the duration of a song, approximately 30 minutes, but the duration of the scan may vary.
Preparation for the scan
- Hydration: For transabdominal ultrasounds we recommend that the patients should drink a lot of water an hour the before scan. A full blader enhance the image sharpness.
- Medications: Keep on using prescribed medicines with or without consulting the health professional. Let your doctor know if you are on any medications.
- Clothing: Avoid constricting garments, therefore they should dress in loose and comfortable clothing. It could be necessary for you to wear a gown for the process of treatment.
- Food: Unlike some of the other guidelines for specific procedures in us, there is no quota as such for food, Obstetric Ultrasound.
- Informing the Technician: Inform the technician whether you have a medical condition or you are pregnant.
Benefits of Obstetric Ultrasound?
Here are the key benefits of obstetric ultrasound:
1.Non-Invasive : It is a painless procedure that uses no incisions and no surgeries hence safe for mother and foetus.
- No Radiation: It involves safe Ultrasonic waves for processes and has no Radiation waves for scans for safety of pregnant women or developing foetuses.
- Real-Time Imaging : It delivers the images to enable the practitioner to examine foetal movement and heartbeat at that same instance.
- Early Detection of Abnormalities: Abnormalities or developmental problems that the unborn baby may be experiencing can be detected by an ultrasound at this stage of pregnancy.
- Foetal Growth: Uterine ultrasonography is conducted frequently so that the foetus can be observed and checked whether the foetus is showing signs of healthy development.
- Determining Age: It ensures the correct due date is predicted by using measurements taken down at the time of the ultrasound.
- Multiple Pregnancies: An ultrasound will help in determining if one is expecting twins, triplets or more for individual follow up.
- Further Testing: In addition, ultrasound can be useful in biopsies and other least invasive interventions since it is capable of giving detailed pictures of the body.
