Medical Termination of Pregnancy

Medical Termination of Pregnancy is done when Unplanned pregnancies occur which can be a very difficult experience for a woman and her partner. The mother cannot support every pregnancy because of various physical, social, medical, and humanitarian causes. Keeping a pregnancy is a woman’s personal choice. India as a country respects that autonomy and has legal provisions for safe medical termination of pregnancy via the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act of 1971, which was amended in 2022. Medintu respects your privacy and confidentiality. Get in touch with our team of expert gynecologists today.

What is MTP Surgery?

MTP is the medical termination of pregnancy (abortion with medicines), which is the use of medicines and medical procedures to terminate the pregnancy. The procedure is done by a gynecologist or a registered medical practitioner with at least six months of experience in the obstetrics and gynecology departments. A medical termination of pregnancy can be done for any reason up to the gestational age of 20–24 weeks. In cases of serious malformations in the child or an imminent threat to the life of the mother and the child, an abortion can be done anytime during the pregnancy. An MTP has to be done within a legal framework for the safety of the mother and, therefore, should be done at a licensed hospital that is recognized for MTP.

What are the Methods of Medical Abortion?

The methods for abortion can be broadly divided into the following types based on when the surgical abortion is
being conducted:
A. Methods used in the first trimester:
1. Medical Abortion: It can be used to terminate pregnancy safely up to 7 weeks in India on an
outpatient basis by using the tablet mifepristone orally on the first day, followed by the tablet misoprostol on
the third day. A review is required on the 15th day to ensure the completion of the process.
2. Suction and Evacuation: it is an advisable method for a 7–12-week period. In this method, a
cannula is used to create suction on the walls of the uterus to suck out the products of conception. It is
an effective method of MTP.
3. Manual Vacuum Aspiration: This procedure is similar to suction evacuation, and a manual syringe
is used to withdraw the contents of the uterus.
B. Methods used in the second trimester:
1. Medial Abortion Methods
a. Prostaglandin: Hospital admission is required in this process, where a high dose of misoprostol is
given through the vagina every 4 hours.
b. Oxytocin: a continuous, diluted infusion of Oxytocin is administered to the woman intravenously to
induce strong contractions and expel the products of conception.
2. Surgical Abortion:
a. Dilatation and Evacuation: It is a surgical procedure done under local anesthesia where special forceps
called sponge-holding forceps are used to carry out the abortion.

What are the Complications of MTP Abortion?

Following are some of the complications that may happen following an MTP:
1. Incomplete abortion, where the products of conception are not expelled completely.
2. heavy bleeding or prolonged bleeding
3. infection because of an incomplete abortion or uterine injury.
4. Uterine perforation during suction and evacuation or dilatation and evacuation processes
5. Allergic reactions to medications given during the medical termination of pregnancy

MTP in India is legal under the following conditions:
1. Failure of contraception used during intercourse
2. Rape
3. Gross malformations in the foetus
4. Threat to the life of the mother or the fetus
5. A minor female or a mentally unstable female
6. Unwanted pregnancy

well.

How do you take care of yourself after the abortion?
