How are Kidney Stones Diagnosed?

The following tests are commonly used,Imaging tests help to give the actual idea about the character of the stones:-

  • Blood tests help examine the electrolytes that might have been deranged by the presence of a stone or the cause of it, like uric acid.
  • Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine – To determine the efficiency of functioning of the kidney.
  • Urinalysis is a physical examination of the urine and can help look for
  • red and white blood cells
  • bacteria
  • lipids
  • sugar
  • Color, pH, specific gravity of urine

Process of Kidney Stone Removal by Using Laser Treatment

The following are four of the methods used for removal of kidney stones

ESWL (extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy)

It involves the insertion of a fiber-optic ureteroscope into the ureter through the urethra. The ureteroscope helps locate the stones precisely using external x-rays and imaging tests. Once located, the stone is broken into smaller pieces with the laser or removed as a whole. The stone fragments are collected in the stone basket and removed from the body. Some fragments flushed out through urine. The surgeon may use ureteral stents, which expand the ureteral passage to help flush out the stones from the body.

RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery)

The procedure is similar to URSL, but the stone is removed much higher up, almost near the kidney. Since precision is a key factor during RIRS surgery and so, the surgeon leverages x-rays and image screening to generate live images of the kidneys on an external screen.

PCNL (Percutaneous Nephrolithonomy)

After the anesthesia, the surgeon makes a tiny incision in the flank area or the lower back. An x-ray-guided nephroscope is inserted through the incision to visualize the stones and determine their precise location.

Next, with the help of a guidewire, the nephroscope moves toward the stones. After locating the stone, it is either removed with microforceps or broken with a laser, followed by stent placement.

URSL (Ureteroscopic Lithotripsy)

It involves using precise high-energy shock waves that break the renal stones into smaller fragments. These stone pieces are flushed out of the body through urine. A stent may be placed to aid the process, which is removed later. It is not done for larger stones.

Procedure for laser kidney surgery or lithotripsy

The lithotripsy procedure is usually outpatient, and the admission is the same as the day of surgery.

  • On admission, one is changed into the hospital gown, and an anesthetic checkup is done to ensure surgical fitness immediately before surgery.
  • One is then shifted to the OT on call and, on reaching the operation theatre, is made to lie on the water bed.
  • The sedation is started, and the surgery is performed to break the kidney stone with lasers. Sometimes, it can be followed by a stent placement, which helps the broken pieces wash away in the urine.
  • Once the operation is over, the patient is shifted to the recovery room and discharged after 2 hours of observation.

You can consult an experienced urologist who specializes in laser kidney stone removal for your surgery.Look for top 10 urologists in my city.

It is a minimally invasive procedure in which the kidney stones are broken up into smaller pieces so that they can pass out easily. A commonly used laser procedure is lithotripsy

Recovery post-kidney surgery is a long journey and requires good care and diet. There is no hospital stay unless an invasive surgery like a nephrectomy is done. For most surgeries, you will be able to do mild daily activities within one week. It is also best to avoid strenuous activity for the next two weeks.

After 1-2 months, you can resume the intensity of activities like before the surgery

The laser treatment does not involve any cuts. Still, a ureteroscope is passed through the urethra to see the stone, and that is also done under anesthesia so that you do not feel any pain during the procedure.

Lithotripsy is one of the best and safest procedures available for the removal of kidney stones through the use of minimally invasive laser treatment. Laser treatment is effective and results successfully for most cases of kidney stones.

These are some steps you can take for faster recovery:

  • Drink lots of water
  • Follow the doctor’s prescription
  • Avoid spicy food for at least two months after the surgery
  • Avoid food containing High proteins
  • Gentle physical activities like walking encouraged
  • Avoid physical exertion
  • If the stents are placed inside, avoid contact sports.

A stent is used to open up the ureters so that stones fragmented via a laser kidney stone treatment can pass through it.

Kidney stone surgery is preferred for stones that are too large to pass out with medications, usually a size above 0.5 cm.

It is difficult for a 7mm stone to pass alone or with medicine. That is why surgery is required to prevent any damage to the kidney or the ureter.

  • Pregnant women
  • Patients with a bleeding disorder
  • Patients with chronic or acute kidney infections, urinary tract infections, or kidney cancer.
  • Patients with abnormalities in the structure or function of the kidney.

It usually starts at Rs.60,000 and can go upto 1,00,000 or more based on the city, surgeon, type of surgery complications, and so on.

After the surgery, you may be placed in observation for 1-2 days to see any complications and post-operative care and sent home if you recover well.

To stop kidney stone pain, your doctor may prescribe NSAIDs such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or, in a hospital setting, tramadol. Certain antispasmodic medications and medicines to reduce nausea may also be helpful.

The cost of PCNL surgery is 80,000 to 95,000 rupees and can vary based on the procedure, complications, the doctor, and the hospital where the procedure is done.

Small stones are treated with proper hydration and certain medications safe for pregnancy. Surgery may be required to remove stones with the help of surgical techniques, but only after the second trimester.

In females, kidney stone is treated in the following ways:

  1. Fluid therapy.
  2. Pain management with NSAIDs
  3. Regular follow-ups
  4. Use of muscle relaxants like tamsulosin
  5. Surgical methods such as ESWL, RIRS or lithotripsy
  6. Pregnant women require special attention and treatment.

After kidney stone surgery, depending on the type of stone found, there are certain restrictions about food that we keep in mind:

  1. Drink a good amount of fluids
  2. Avoid shellfish, organ meat, and red meat if you have uric acid stones.
  3. For calcium oxalate stones, eat or drink milk and milk products like yoghurt to prevent their absorption.
  4. eat protein in moderate amounts
  5. Avoid too much vitamin C through supplements to prevent oxalate stones.
