Invitro Fertilization(IVF)
IVF is one of the more popular assisted reproductive techniques used in India by several couples struggling with infertility. It has recently been a boon and allowed several infertile couples to be parents. Every year almost 2-3 lakhs IVF is done in India. What is In-vitro Fertilization?
In vitro fertilization is fertilizing the Egg with the sperm outside of the body in a lab on the Petri dish. If formed, the embryo is planted into the uterus of the woman who wants to conceive. She then undergoes monitoring for any signs of pregnancy.
The process of IVF happens in cycles. A single cycle of IVF can last for almost three weeks.
Pregnancy can happen in the first go for some couples; for others, a team may require 2-3 cycles of IVF.

What is the process of IVF?
The IVF process starts with counseling the couple about the course of the procedure and addressing the couple’s concerns. The couple is screened through male and female infertility tests to diagnose the problem. Accordingly, planning goes forward for the type of IVF and if any additional procedures if the requirement arises, like ovarian stimulation, are added.
IVF cycle will have the following components.
- Ovarian stimulation with drugs and monitoring of the follicles.
- Extracting the Egg once the follicles mature.
- Preparation of sperms for fertilization in the Petri dish.
- The Egg in a Petri dish undergoes fertilization by either introducing sperms on the Petri dish ( conventional method) or injecting the sperm directly into the Egg ( Intracytoplasmic injection of sperm)
- The embryo culture is done after fertilization, and then the embryo is transferred into the uterus by an embryo transfer method.
- Following-up is done with a serum B- HCG test 19-14 days later.
If the process is a success, pregnancy is monitored thereon. If the method fails, another cycle is recommended, or a different reproductive technique is used.
