What is Cataracts?

Cataract surgery is an ophthalmic surgery that refers to removing a cataractous lens and replacing the natural lens of your eye with an artificial one. A cataract is formed when the lens layers undergo fibrosis and degeneration, which causes complaints of blurring and clouding of vision blurry or cloudy vision. Cataract surgeries are mostly done outpatient or as a daycare surgery, especially if covered under insurance. What are the Types of Cataract Surgery?

Over time new techniques have come up for cataract surgery. The choice of surgery depends on the specifics of the case. The ones commonly used are as follows.

  • Phacoemulsification is a commonly used technique for cataract surgery wherein an ultrasonic handpiece is used to emulsify the lens, which is then suctioned out using a suction device. Once the lens is removed, a foldable lens of appropriate power is injected into the lens capsule.
  • Extracapsular Cataract Extraction (ECCE)– In this cataract surgery, the lens and the anterior capsule are removed, and the posterior capsule is used to tether the intraocular lens.it is done for special cases where “phaco” or phacoemulsification cannot be performed.
  • Microincision Cataract Surgery (MICS)- It is a minimally invasive surgery where the incision made on the sclera to enter the eyeball is very small. The recovery period is shorter, and there are fewer complications. The lens is emulsified and removed in phaco but with a lower energy of the ultrasonic waves. It is a more precise surgery.
  • Femtosecond Laser-assisted Cataract Surgery (FLACS) is the most advanced cataract surgery.FLACS is a computer-based surgery in which a laser with vibrations of 15s is used to cut the lens into small pieces, which are then removed by the surgeon to be replaced by an intraocular lens. The advantage of FLACS lies in the damage to surrounding tissues is much less, and recovery is faster.

Other surgeries like intracapsular cataract extraction, manual small incision cataract surgery (MSICS), etc., are also present, which are seldom used but may be necessary for certain special conditions.

What to Expect after Cataract Surgery?

Once the surgery is done and the doctor has cleared you to go home, recovery starts. Below are some points to guide you toward a better recovery.

  1. The anesthesia can cause your vision to be a bit blurry and cause loss of sensation over the eye.
  2. The eye will be bandaged to protect the fresh cuts on the sclera due to the surgery from getting infections or irritation from dust, fumes, and other foreign bodies.
  3. The doctor will call you for a review to remove the pad and eyepatch. Carry dark goggles to the appointment so the doctor can explain their use.
  4. Take all the prescribed medication on time.
  5. After the surgery, you may have some itching or irritation once the anesthesia wears off.do not scratch your eye or put pressure on it.
  6. Go for regular follow-ups to make sure you have a good, complication-free recovery
