Serum Ferritin Test
- A serum ferritin blood test is a clinical tool to detect iron levels in the blood. Ferritin is a universal intracellular protein that stores iron in a non-toxic, safe form and releases it in a controlled way.
- Iron is crucial for normal body functions. Red blood cells (erythrocytes) need iron to develop and transport oxygen in the body. Other organs of the body such as bone marrow, liver, and muscles also need an adequate amount of iron to function normally. Iron in the body helps Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) synthesis and electron transport chain within cells.

- Fewer ferritin levels indicate iron-deficiency anaemia (low haemoglobin levels) causing extreme fatigue, weakness, pale skin, etc. Iron deficiency anaemia results from poor nutrition and high blood loss.
- High levels of ferritin can harm your liver, heart, pancreas and joints. High levels of iron are mainly caused by a disease called hemochromatosis (iron overload). It’s mostly genetic. It can harm your body, including your liver, heart and pancreas. It’s impossible to prevent this disease, but before time diagnosis and treatment can stop, slow or reverse organ damage. Many individuals with this illness never show any symptoms; largely women who lose iron through a menstrual cycle.

What is the procedure for the serum ferritin test?
- Serumferritin levels are measured in medical laboratories. The measured ferritin levels are directly linked with the overall amount of iron stored in the body.
- Your healthcare provider will collect a blood sample in the morning. Before the examination, your physician will instruct you not to eat and drink for up to 12 hours. No specific preparation is required for the test.
- After giving your blood sample you can leave immediately for your daily activities.
What are the indications of the serum ferritin test?
Your physician will prescribe a serum ferritin test if you have the following symptoms of iron deficiency anaemia or high iron levels in the body.
What are the Symptoms of fewer amounts of iron levels?
- Pale skin
- Fatigue
- Weakness
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Breathlessness
- Fast heartbeat
What are the Symptoms of more amounts of iron levels?
- Pain in the abdomen
- Heart problems
- Joint pain
- Hair loss on the body
- Loss of libido (reduced sex drive)
- Weakness
- Weight loss
What does serum ferritin results signify?
Low ferritin test results may signify:
- Iron deficiency anaemia
- Blood loss (commonly from the gastrointestinal tract)
- Your body iron absorption is insufficient
Results of the ferritin test could be high due to certain health conditions and not due to too much iron. High concentrations of ferritin in the blood could be due to
- Hemochromatosis (iron overload) is a disorder in which the body stores too much iron in the body tissues.
- Chronic disorders, including diabetes and liver-related problems
- Malignancy such as leukaemia, lymphoma, or breast carcinoma
- Adult-onset Still’s disease
- Hyperthyroidism
- Porphyria – Group of liver disorders
- Diseases of the spleen, kidney, bone marrow, or liver
- Inflammation, infection, obesity and age
- Multiple blood transfusions
- Alcohol abuse
- Taking excess iron supplements

Serum ferritin in Covid-19
A high concentration of serum ferritin is found in few cases of Covid-19
Ferritin and Interleukin 6 (IL-6) are possible immunological biomarkers for severe and worse cases of Covid-19. Ferritin and C-reactive protein could be screening tools for early detection of systemic inflammatory response syndromein Covid-19 patients.
- Studies have shown that in Covid-19 patients along with a medical condition such as diabetes, thrombosis or cancer; ferritin levels are significantly increased. In Covid-19 patients, with a sharp increase in ferritin blood concentrations manifest a more serious disease course and increase in mortality rate.
- To check hyper inflammation and disease progression in hospitalized Covid-19 patients; early identification of ferritin level is strongly suggested.
