What is PCOD?

PCOD, or polycystic ovarian disease, is a hormonal disorder where the natural hormonal milieu of the female body is disrupted causing physical symptoms such as increased facial hair, body hair, hair fall, sudden weight gain acne and fertility issues. The symptoms usually happen because of increased testosterone levels in the female body secreted by ovarian follicles that have become cystic. It is a prevalent problem and affects one out of 4 Indian women. In recent years, there has been a growing trend of increased incidence of PCOS in young girls due to improper diet, exercise and genetics. It is now an epidemic in women’s health and needs to be dealt with in an aware and prompt manner. Such a problem of global importance requires intervention from both health professionals and parents so that it can be controlled and managed effectively.
Elevation of urea in the blood can lead to increased symptomatology related to chronic kidney and liver diseases. It is an alarm bell for the physician that the condition is worsening. Regulated blood urea and nitrogen tests can be a useful way to keep tabs on your condition.

What is the procedure for the blood test for PCOD?

The PCOD tests are mostly blood tests that can be done from the comforts of your home with a trusted online medical service portal such as Medintu.

  1. Book a PCOD blood profile appointment with a trusted online medical service portal like Medintu. On successful booking, a phlebotomist will reach your home at the designated time.
  1. If there are instructions for fasting or avoiding certain kinds of food or beverages, kindly follow them to get the best results.
  1. Once the phlebotomist reaches your place, he will provide you with some instructions for the test. They will then set up the equipment necessary to withdraw the blood safely, such as an alcohol swab, tourniquet, syringes, collecting tubes, and so on, to start the sample collection process.
  1. As a first step, the phlebotomist ties a tourniquet around the arm of the person. The veins pop up, and the phlebotomist palpates the best vein on the arm for withdrawing the blood. Usually, the median cubital vein at the inner bend of the arm is chosen for withdrawing blood.
  1. The site where the phlebotomist will puncture the vein to withdraw blood is cleaned with an alcohol swab. The phlebotomist then inserts the needle into the desired vein and slowly pulls back the syringe to fill it with blood dark red venous blood from the vessel.
  1. Once blood is collected sufficiently for the tests, the syringe is removed and transferred to tiny plastic containers called vacutainers for storage and transport.
  1. Compression is applied over the puncture site with cotton, and a small sticker is placed at the site of the prick to prevent any ooze of blood.
  1. The collected blood is put in a gray, red or purple vacutainer based on the tests being done.
  1. Once the blood is collected, it is stored and sent to a lab for processing.
  1. Once the sample reaches the lab, generating the report may take 24-48 hours.

What are the types of PCOD?

There are different types, such as:

  1. Insulin-resistant PCOD is a prevalent type of PCOD. It is characterized by high levels of insulin in the body, which causes high levels of androgens such as testosterone, giving rise to various classical PCOD symptoms. The body becomes resistant to insulin, so there is an increased dysregulation of blood sugar and diabetes.
  2. Inflammatory PCOD, caused by an inflammatory state in the body, leads to an imbalance in female hormones. The information can be because of poor diet, stressful environment and poor sleep. There can be additional symptoms such as infections, headaches and allergies.
  3. Post Pill PCOD is PCOD that starts after abruptly stopping old contraceptive pills in women of reproductive age group. This sudden stoppage of pills can lead to excessive androgen formation by the ovaries, leading to PCOD symptoms. Post Pill PCOD is usually reversible after 8 to 9 months of treatment.
  4. Adrenal PCOS is another type of PCOS that is not like the other categories of PCOS and is not involved in insulin resistance. It is primarily because of the body’s response to stress, mainly the adrenal glands, which produce excessive androgens known as DHEAS.

How is PCOD diagnosed?

PCOD can be diagnosed by a good History taking by the doctor, where the doctor will ask you about your menstrual cycles and whether you experience any of the symptoms of PCOD. The clinical examination will be followed by a set of investigations, which include an. Ültrasound of the abdomen and pelvis to look for cysts, which are known to show a string of pearl necklace pattern on the ovary.

The doctor may even prescribe blood tests for levels of certain hormones in the blood, such as

  1. testosterone
  2. luteinizing hormone
  3. follicular stimulating hormone
  4. Prolactin levels
  5. Thyroid test to rule out a hypothyroidism problem.

What should I do after the results of my PCOD test?

Once the results of the PCOD test are available to you, visit the gynecologist with the reports so that they can further interpret them and decide on the further course of management of your condition. The physician may suggest lifestyle alterations such as a healthy fiber-rich diet, exercise, and medications if required.
