What is a Cervical MRI scan?
Use of radio waves and energy from powerful magnets to produce complete images of your body is known as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a safe and painless method. During a cervical MRI, your cervical spine and soft tissues are scanned. To help with the diagnosis, an MRI of the cervical spine is performed.
- tumours in your soft tissues or bones.
- spine fracture, or herniated disks.
- aneurysms, or artery bulges, or other vascular conditions.
- other soft tissue conditions, irregularities in the bones, or joint conditions.
Why are cervical spine MRIs Done?
An MRI of the cervical (SER-vih-kul) spine can identify a number of disorders affecting the neck and upper back, including difficulties with the soft tissues, nerves, and disks that make up the spinal column. An MRI can be performed by medical professionals to evaluate the structure of the seven cervical spine bones, the spinal cord, or to look for any injuries in the area.
Doctors can also benefit from a cervical spine MRI by:
- Across any arm, shoulder, or neck pain, weakness, tingling, or weakened senses.
- Identify a few different chronic nervous system illnesses.
- Examine the bones of the spine and surrounding tissues for tumors, bleeding, swelling, infections, or inflammatory disorders.
Does a Cervical MRI have any risks?
- an implant, such screws or a metal plate.
- a pacemaker for the heart.
- metallic studs or holes.
- an insulin pump or other drug-delivery device referred to as an intrauterine device (IUD) with metal in it.
- clips for aneurysms.
- a fragment or bullet trapped in the body.
MRI scans are very safe. They don’t use any radiation. The MRI scanner produces a very strong magnetic field. Any metal in your body or on your skin will interact with it. Inform your physician if you have:
What can I expect during the scan?
1. The MRI machine is connected to a little bed on which you will lie. Your arms will be by your sides and your head supported by a headrest.
2. To block out the loud hitting and thumping sounds the machine creates while it’s operating, the MRI technician will provide you earphones. Music listening may be an option for you to choose during the scan. You can relax and get your mind off the noise by doing this.
3. You will have a structure over your head and neck called a “coil.” There’s an antenna inside the coil. It helps in concentrating the machine’s energy to get the most accurate photographs possible. Additionally, the MRI tech will put a signaling device in the palm of your hand. It allows you to request help during the test.
4. The table will slide into the machine once you’re in the right position. Through a window in the adjacent room, the MRI technician can see you. They will keep informing you on the status of the scan.
5. An MRI of the cervical region usually takes 30 to 45 minutes. It is essential that you remain still as much as possible during this period. Should you move, the visuals can get blurry.
