FAQs
What are the main types of Diabetes Mellitus?
Type 1 diabetes – It is an autoimmune disease. The pancreas fails to produce insulin due to beta cells (insulin-producing cells) disorder. Type 1 diabetes is observed in children and young adults. Type 1 diabetes individuals need to take insulin daily. Therefore, it is also known as insulin-dependent diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes – It is a condition in which the body develops insulin resistance. The body produces insufficient insulin or the body cells become immune to insulin. Type 2 diabetes is present in 95% of people, mostly in middle-aged or elderly individuals. Other names include adult-onset diabetes and insulin-resistant diabetes.
Gestational diabetes (GD) – It is a type of diabetes observed only during pregnancy. A healthy diet and regular exercises can help to manage GD, but some mothers need insulin. If not treated, gestational diabetes can cause health problems for both mother and the baby.
