The Covid-19 samples are collected from the Nasopharyngeal Swab ( Nose ) or an Oropharyngeal Swab(Throat).
Procedure for Covid 19 Home Swab Collection
The phlebotomists should wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as disposable long-sleeve coveralls, gloves, N-95 mask, eyewear and shoe covers and follow all the biosafety precautions.

Slowly tilt the patient’s head backside, keeping the chin steady. Request the patient to open the mouth, then depress the tongue with the help of a tongue depressor, a clean swab is taken, and both the tonsils and posterior part of the pharynx are swabbed thoroughly with a rotating motion.

Slowly tilt the patient’s head back side, keeping the chin steady. Insert the swab in the nose parallelly to the palate till the nasal turbinates. Keep the swab for few seconds and then gently remove them in a rotating motion.
In both the procedures, the Covid-19 swab test sample is placed in a tube containing VTM (Viral Transport Medium), labelled with the patient details (name, age, UHID) and date.
