About the COVID-19 RT PCR Test
What is an RTPCR?
RTPCR stands for reverse transcriptase polymerized chain reaction. It is a diagnostic test used to detect the presence of COVID – the 19 viruses in samples of nose and throat swabs of infected individuals. The principle is to amplify the viral genetic material using special enzymes like reverse transcriptase to a level that can be detected and read by the PCR machine.
How is the RTPCR done?
Once you enroll for a COVID test via home-based testing services or go to a lab, the technician dressed in a personal protective equipment gown uses a long plastic stick with cotton to take swabs from the nose and throat. They may do so by putting the swab through your nostrils and twisting it to touch all the walls of your nasal cavity. The sample is kept in a preservative containing vial. A swab is similarly taken from the throat or the pharynx and sent to a lab for testing.
Is the procedure painful?
The COVID-19 sample collection can be a little painful, and the swab may irritate the nerve endings in the nasal or throat mucosa or lining and cause you to sneeze or tear up. However, it is very momentary, and you should feel fine within a few hours of the test.
How can I get an RTPCR done?
RTPCR test can be done by going to a Laboratory approved by the government for COVID-19 testing or booking an appointment online for a home-based COVID-19 sample collection. Medintu provides excellent home-based testing services that are accurate, fast, and reasonably priced.
How can I get a home-based COVID-19 test done?

When should I get tested?
- If you are suffering from a cold, cough, fever, or flu-like symptoms, you have to get tested immediately.\
- If any close contact tested positive for COVID-19 recently.
- If you wish to travel to another state or territory and a COVID-19 test report is compulsory.
What if my COVID- 19 test comes positive?
A positive COVID- 19 test means that you have a detectable viral load level in your body and can transmit the disease to other people. The viral load is not an indicator of disease severity, and you can have a high viral load of COVID-19 virus and still be asymptomatic.
What if my COVID-19 test report comes negative?
A negative report would mean that the viral load is almost undetectable or absent in your swab samples. Therefore, you are free of the infection and are not infectious to other people.
What is a rapid antigen test?
A rapid antigen test is a good point of the care screening tool and diagnostic tool for the presence of COVID19 antigen in the nose and throat. It gives almost a 95% accurate result, is fast, easy, and can be self-administered. It is based on the principle of detection of certain proteins specific to the COVID- 19 virus and uses it to display a positive or negative result. It is cheaper than RTPCR tests and readily available in nearby pharmacies, and it can give results in less than 10minutes to upto 30minutes.
What is the best time to get tested for COVID-19?
The best time to get tested, according to harvard.edu, is five days after exposure to a COVID-19 positive person. By this time, if you are infected, the viral load will be sufficient to be detected by RTPCR, which is the standard gold test for COVID. Testing very fast may lead to false-negative results. Despite an infection, you test negative on a COVID-19 RTPCR test. Therefore, continue to wear a mask if you go out in public for atleast ten days, after which you can do a repeat test.
How can I protect myself from COVID-19?
You can protect yourself and your dear ones from COVID-19 by social distancing, wearing well-fitted surgical or N-95 masks, and observing good hand hygiene. COVID-19 is an airborne infection that spreads through small fluid particles called aerosols produced by sneezing, coughing, and even talking. Choose well-ventilated places to meet up with friends and colleagues, and keep your general health boosted with a good diet and workout s. In case of the elderly or immunocompromised, avoid crowds, stay indoors as much as possible, control any underlying disease like diabetes, and get vaccinated.
