What is cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a type of fat or steroid that circulates in our blood. Cholesterol is an animal fat produced in the liver and is important for several bodily functions, such as the production of hormones in the body, vitamin D, and so on. All cholesterol is, however, not good for health. There are two types of cholesterol: low-density lipid cholesterol and high-density lipid cholesterol. Low-density lipid cholesterol is a marker for poor cardiac health and atherosclerosis, and high-density lipid cholesterol helps transport cholesterol through the body. Health problems arise when there is an increase in the level of LDL cholesterol. It can accumulate in the vessels and clog them, giving rise to diseases such as stroke and coronary artery disease. It is important to keep cholesterol levels in check.

Procedure for Cholesterol Test:

The blood cholesterol test is a simple blood test for which home blood sample collection can be done with the help of a trusted home-based medical service provider such as Medintu.

1. Look for the blood cholesterol level test under the blood tests section on the Medintu homepage and book an appointment at a convenient time for our phlebotomist to come and collect a blood sample.
2. There is usually a period of fasting of 12 hours or overnight to get accurate results of the blood cholesterol levels. If there are any instructions for fasting or avoiding certain kinds of food or beverages or medications like cholesterol-lowering agents, kindly follow them to get the best results.
3. Once the phlebotomist reaches your place, he will provide you with some instructions for the test.
4. With your consent, he will then take out the materials needed to carry out the blood test, such as an alcohol swab, a tourniquet, syringes, collecting tubes, and so on.
5. The phlebotomist first ties a tourniquet around the person’s arm. This causes the veins to pop up so that the phlebotomist can choose the best vein on the arm for withdrawing the blood. Normally, a vein called the median cubital vein at the inner bend of the arm is chosen for withdrawing blood.
6. The site of the blood draw is cleaned with an alcohol swab. The phlebotomist then inserts the needle into the site and slowly pulls back the syringe to fill it with dark red blood from the vessel.
7. After drawing sufficient blood, the syringe is removed, and the blood is transferred to tiny plastic containers called vacutainers for storage and transport.
8. Compression is applied over the site of blood removal with cotton, and later a small sticker is placed at the site of the prick to prevent any ooze of blood.
9. Once the blood is collected in the vacutainer, it is stored and taken by our partner to a lab for processing.
10. Once the sample is given to the lab, it may take 24-48 hours to generate the report.

FAQs

High levels of cholesterol, according to numerous studies, have been shown to have an increased correlation with poor cardiovascular health and poor outcomes for cardiovascular accidents such as heart attacks or strokes. This is because cholesterol creates an environment for atherosclerosis, which clogs the vessels and reduces oxygen and nutrient supply to vital organs, causing damage and poor recovery.

There are two important types of cholesterol measured in a cholesterol test known as

  1. Low-density lipid, which is a bad cholesterol involved in disease processes
  2. high-density lipid, which is involved in maintaining good cardiac and vascular health by helping in the transport of fats in the body.
