What is an RTPCR?
RTPCR stands for reverse transcriptase polymerized chain reaction. It is a diagnostic test used to detect the presence of the H3N2 virus in samples of nose and throat swabs of people suspected of H3N2 infection. The principle is to amplify the viral genetic material using special enzymes, like reverse transcriptase, to the level that can be detected and read by the PCR machine.
How is the RTPCR Done?
To get an RTPCR done, book a slot for an H3N2 test through home-based testing services or go to an ICMR-certified laboratory. The sample collection technician dressed in a personal protective equipment gown will use a long plastic stick with cotton at the ends to take swabs from the nose and throat. They may do so by putting the swab in through the nostrils and twisting it inside to sweep through the nasal cavity’s walls. A similar sweeping movement across the nasopharynx is made in the throat to take a swab from the throat. The swab is then broken off from the rest of the stick and stored in a particular vial. This well-preserved vial is then taken for testing under cool storage containers.
