What do haemoglobin blood tests consist of?
Red blood cells (RBCs) contain the iron-containing protein haemoglobin, which has the ability to bind oxygen and gives blood its red colour. The lungs receive oxygen thanks to it. The haemoglobin test quantifies the level of haemoglobin in a blood sample.
Low haemoglobin is a sign of anaemia, which might include:
- Because of significant bleeding, which could result from trauma, injury, ulcers, polyps, colon cancer, haemorrhoids, or heavy menstrual bleeding.
- Iron, folate, or B12 deficiency
- Bone marrow conditions like multiple myeloma, aplastic anaemia, leukaemia, or lymphoma
- Long-term kidney disease
- Conditions or diseases with chronic inflammation
- Thalassemia
- Diseases like sickle cell anaemia, hemolytic anaemia, hereditary spherocytosis, and G6PD deficiency that cause an excessive amount of RBC to be destroyed.
High haemoglobin levels indicate polycythaemia, which can be caused by:
- Lung disease
- Congenital heart disease
- Kidney tumours that produce too much erythropoietin
Prerequisites and procedure
A small needle is used to draw blood from a vein in the arm. If the patient is only going for a haemoglobin test, there is no need to fast; however, if other blood tests are also recommended, the patient must fast as directed by the doctor.
Can a healthy diet help me maintain normal haemoglobin levels?
Yes, a well-balanced diet can aid in maintaining optimal haemoglobin levels, as iron, vitamin B12, and folate are the most common causes of anaemia.
Is there any danger in performing this test?
There is no danger in performing the test. However, because this test requires a needle prick to obtain a blood sample, a patient may experience increased bleeding, hematoma formation (blood collection under the skin), bruising, or infection at the site of needle prick in very rare cases.
What additional tests might your doctor order if a test result is abnormal?
If the results are abnormal, your doctor may order the following tests: Transferrin, Complete Blood Count, Iron Studies Serum Transferrin, Serum Iron, Total Iron Binding Capacity, Protein Total, Serum Ferritin
Why take a Hemoglobin Test?
A haemoglobin test is most commonly used to check for anaemia, a condition in which your red blood cells are insufficient. If you are anaemic, your cells will not receive the proper amount of oxygen.
