What is PCOD?

PCOD (Polycystic Ovary Disease) is a condition where a woman’s ovaries produce immature or partially mature eggs in large numbers, eventually turning into cysts in the ovaries. This leads to enlarged ovaries that secrete excessive amounts of androgens (male hormones), causing a range of symptoms including irregular menstrual cycles, weight gain, acne, excessive hair growth, and thinning hair on the scalp. It is a common hormonal disorder that can affect a woman’s overall health and fertility. Managing PCOD often involves lifestyle changes, medication, and in some cases, medical procedures.

Symptoms of PCOD:

The following are the symptoms of PCOD to look out for

  1. Missed periods, irregular menstrual cycles, less or heavy bleeding during the period.
  2. Excessive growth of hair in areas similar to a male pattern of body hair known as hirsutism.
  3. Facial acne or acne on the chest and back.
  4. Sudden weight gain and difficulty losing weight.
  5. Pelvic pain or discomfort due to ovarian cysts.

What are the types of PCOD?

There are different types, such as:

  1. Insulin-resistant PCOD is a prevalent type of PCOD. It is characterized by high levels of insulin in the body, which causes high levels of androgens such as testosterone, giving rise to various classical PCOD symptoms. The body becomes resistant to insulin, so there is an increased dysregulation of blood sugar and diabetes.
  2. Inflammatory PCOD, caused by an inflammatory state in the body, leads to an imbalance in female hormones.

How is PCOD diagnosed?

PCOD can be diagnosed by a good History taking by the doctor, where the doctor will ask you about your menstrual cycles and whether you experience any of the symptoms of PCOD. The clinical examination will be followed by a set of investigations, which include an. Ültrasound of the abdomen and pelvis to look for cysts, which are known to show a string of pearl necklace pattern on the ovary.
