What is the Procedure IVF Treatment?
- Temporary Menopause and Birth Control pills- To undergo IVF, the menstruation cycle must be stopped artificially in order to get pregnant. Here birth control pills or estrogen to stop ovulation is given, medicines or daily injections to stop the menstrual cycle.
- Ovarian stimulation- To stimulate and boost the production of the eggs in ovaries, hormonal injections such as FSH(follicle stimulating hormone) is given. Stimulations are monitored by ultrasounds Trigger shots are given once the eggs are ready to mature before 36 hours of egg retrieval process.
- Restoring the eggs- Retrieval of eggs, usually a needle is passed in each ovary present in the vagina. A suction device that is attached to the needle pulls out the eggs from each follicle.After this the eggs are placed on a transparent base containing some solution and then placed in the incubator.Cramps and bleeding could be the after effects.
- Fertilizing the eggs- Simultaneously sperms are also collected from the male partner or donor. They are washed, thawed and most active ones are selected. These collected eggs and sperms are fertilized. If there are any immature eggs they fail to fertilize. Out of 10 mature eggs only 7 will fertilize.
- Development of embryo- Once the mature egg successfully fertilizes it develops into embryo. They are monitored regularly for 5-7 days. A few embryos are picked out and frozen for the next attempt.
- Embryo transfer- Within 5-6 days of the egg restoration process, the embryos are inserted in the uterus. An instrument named Catheter is used that is attached to a syringe that contains embryos and is injected in the uterus not taking more than 10 minutes. After 2 weeks of embryo transfer blood and pregnancy test is done to reveal if the IVF is successful or not.
