Low back pain

Low back pain (LBP) or lumbago is a common problem involving the musculoskeletal system of the back.

This lumbago can vary from mild to severe pain, and can be divided by duration such as –

  • Acute (pain less than 6 weeks)
  • Sub-chronic (pain lasting from 6 to 12 weeks)
  • Chronic (pain lasting more than 12 weeks)

Causes of low back pain:

  • Low back pain muscle strain: Strain in the lumbar region is one of the leading causes of backache. Lower back muscle spasms are observed frequently because it supports the upper body weight and is involved in various body movements. Strains mainly occur when muscle fibers are abnormally pulled or torn.
  • Poor posture: Poor body posture could misalign the musculoskeletal system, such as slouching forward too much or leaning too far back can cause back pain. Bad posture results in muscle weakness, joint compression, and abnormal stress on the vertebral disc.
  • Age:  People above 30 years of age are more susceptible to lower backache. Disks get weak and wear down with advancing age. Normal aging leads to reduced bone density, bone strength, and elasticity of muscles and ligaments in the body. But these effects can be decreased by physical exercises, proper lifting and moving techniques, correct nutrition and body composition, and no smoking habits.
  • Spondylolysis: It is a health problem in which there is a problem in a part of the spine called the pars interarticularis. It is a fracture in the vertebrae, in which the bone density decreases and can grow bone spurs. This condition is called lumbar spondylosis and causes low back pain. Lumbar spondylosis is associated with disc degeneration and Osteophytosis and is more common among middle-aged, elderly, and young athletes.
  • Disease: People with a family history of osteoarthritis, malignant disease (Multiple myeloma), metastatic disease, and other diseases have a greater risk of low back pain.
